Decorating the Christmas Tree

Posted by on November 24, 2009

o,

carolersWhen I was a child we had the tradition of decorating the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving. Instead of shopping on Black Friday, my family made it a tradition to spend time together. Actually I think my mother did shop, but I don’t think we as children were awake yet!

Decorating trees in winter was not originally a Christian tradition. However, it was adopted as such in Germany in the 7th century. The three points of the triangular shape of the Christmas tree represent the Trinity. Thus, what was originally a pagan tradition has turned into a Christian one because celebrants all over the world use it to decorate their home during the festivities surrounding the birth of Jesus.

How will you decorate your tree this year? Here are some options.

  • Tradition. I would guess that most of us have trees that fall under this category. My parents dust off the same box of ornaments every year and some of those ornaments are precious. I can remember making one angel ornament back when I was in kindergarten. I couldn’t believe it when my version looked exactly like the demo – I was so proud of it. :)
  • Theme. Another choice is that you can decorate your tree based on a theme. For example, you can choose your favorite Christmas special, like Frosty the Snowman, and base your ornaments on that. Or you can feature a type of ornament, a certain color, etc. The beauty of themes is that they are endless.
  • Real tree or fake… You will also need to determine if you want a real tree or a fake tree. There are benefits to both. I personally love having a real tree because it smells sensational. I love my parent’s fake tree though – it’s so pretty and it’s a tradition.

Decorating the Christmas tree is a special tradition and one that I know I enjoy each year. Also, if you have a cat, you may want to consider having a cat friendly Christmas tree.

Merry Christmas!
