Beverages to Drink While Trimming the Tree

Posted by on December 2, 2009

christmas ornamentsHave you decorated your Christmas tree yet? If not, why not make things extra festive by preparing some of these delicious beverages while trimming the tree? Each year, my family makes it a tradition to drink egg nog. Some years I actually make it – but most of the time I just buy it. Okay, and I spike it with a little brandy, too. :)

Egg Nog

You can make it but honestly, I find that it really isn’t w0rth the hassle. Plus the thought of drinking raw eggs makes me a little squeamish. So I opt to buy it because it’s nice and pasteurized. I’m actually lactose intolerant so I usually buy Soy Nog as an alternative.

Gluehwein

I got into the habit of drinking this mulled wine throughout the holiday season from when I lived in Germany because it is a tradition at the Christmas markets. Sometimes I can find the imported, bottled Gluehwein in some liquor stores in the US but it isn’t the same. Instead, I prefer to mull my own.

Hot Chocolate

I love to drink hot chocolate while trimming the tree – especially when it’s decorated by a peppermint stick and spiked with a little peppermint schnapps (not for the kiddies!). For a child friendly version, put a touch of mint syrup and garnish with a candy cane. For an extra treat, you can also add mini-marshmallows.

Irish Coffee

Now that I’m an adult, I’ve developed a taste for this cocktail which involves Irish whiskey, coffee, sugar, and whipped cream. YUMMY. For your kids – stick to hot chocolate. :)
